Artist Statement
I aim for beauty, truth, and order, focusing on enchantment rather than self-expression. My compositions depict people, animals, and scenes as metaphors for a particular state of being: the silence of an emotion, the portent of a moment, or the spirit of a place.
I start my creative process by visualizing an image that I organize on the canvas by drawing the outlines of my subject with paint. From there, I use cadmium colors mostly, mixed to create the myriad desired hues in bold, fresh marks—intent on building pictures that express the vulnerability, mystery, and delight of life on earth.
My work draws from the powerful sensations and visual excitement of my childhood when people seemed magically connected to their surroundings and to some invisible yet palpable realm.
